We all seek good health and longevity. Ever since the failed expedition of Ponce de Leon, we continue to search and are lured by the magical “fountain of youth.”
It is clearly evident that we are living longer, closely approaching the 8th decade of life. Modern medicine and technologic advances empowers us with the tools to diagnose and treat early.
The 4th decade is a critical period to identify negative lifestyle patterns, which may be detrimental and shorten the male lifespan.
These risk factors include:
- Increasing waist size
- Elevated cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Deteriorating sexual performance
- Excessive alcohol intake
- Failure to use a seatbelt

The period between the 4th and 5th decades of life is the “window of opportunity” since it provides ample time to eliminate bad habits and take corrective actions.
As a result of living longer, 50 years old is the “new thirty.”
The existence of a true male menopause or Andropause remains controversial. What we do know is that certain types of physical and physiologic changes do occur beginning in the late thirties.
- Decline in testosterone accompanied by changes in body fat distribution
- Decreased muscle tone
- Diminished sexual drive
- Hair loss (male pattern baldness)

restore health and stability in the midlife male.
