Steps to a Healthier Lifestyle

  • Health assessment
Evaluate overall medical conditions and family risk factors which can be modified eg. Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, hormone deficiencies, eliminate tobacco...

  • Assess extent of stress
Life is hectic and chaotic- a balancing act between fluctuations in occupational demands and the pressures of family dynamics.

  • Assess Body Image
    Can it be improved?

  • Assess overall attitude and general outlook
    Optimistic? Pessimistic?

  • Understand your body
Become sensitized and attuned to your body’s signals, know when something is different and seek medical attention

  • Diet and regulate intake
Avoid radical diets- seek a change in lifestyle
    Smaller portions
    Increased water intake
Concentrate on lean meats, fish, chicken, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, green tea, wine (moderate intake), “Mediterranean diet,” limit carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids. See www.americanheart.org
Supplements: zinc, vitamin E, saw palmetto

  • Daily Exercise
30-60 Minutes (There is no substitute)
    Avoid stagnation
    Keep moving
Exercising when not realizing it When there is a choice between walking and taking an elevator choose the former
Get a partner or get a dog. Buy an ipod.

  • Adopt a passion
Acquire new knowledge or a diversion (join a club)
Learn something altogether different (something not normally considered)
Stimulate the brain “activate the inactivity”
    Seek challenging mental tasks

  • Hair grooming and skin care (often ignored in men)
    General maintenance and preventative measures
